PEARS, as badass as they are.. Almost didn't happen.. They were in a band previously called the "lollies", like you know .. "Lolli pop lolli pop, oh lalala... " I'll stop there and they broke up because they were pretty much like (to quote Chuck Livid of TuffGnarl.com) .. "Like Slash and Axl Rose" so yeah! They got along real good!! Ha..

The Lollies split up for 6 Months with "No sign of ever getting back together again!" it was so hardcore that Brian Petrus (Guitarist) joined a SKA BAND!! So you know shit got real!! Sobriety and lots of self-improvement took place in each band member's life during this 6 Month break and then suddenly while at a Coffee shop Zach and Brian were talking to each-other.. After hours of Zach telling Brian NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!! I DON'T WANNA START A FUCKING BAND!! They started a band! They all got back together and had a Fruit Picnic on Mardi Gras Day with Epitaph Records band Off With Their Head! By Fruit Picnic, I mean.. PEARS PLAYED A FUCKING AWESOME FIRST SHOW!!!
PEARS sound is raw, it's lethal and it's just... Better than the mass majority of the new-school "Hardcore Punk" bands that we keep enduring anymore.. Yes, I said enduring.. So many of them just don't have that old school feel to them. Many are copycats that just re-write what's been said over and over again before.. They don't have much appeal to them if you've been listening to the previous 40 years of punk rock music.. If you're new to it all, then yeah. The newer bands might do something for you, but that's really the only exception.
PEARS though, not this band... I was at an old friend's house in May of 2016 and I had suddenly heard that the Subhumans UK were gonna play up in KCMO on June 2 and I'm all like"HOLY FUCKING SHIT!!! THE SUBHUMANS!!!! IN KANSAS!!! WOAHHH!!!" unfortunately I never made it to the show, but.. PEARS were playing with them and.. Within a single YouTube search, I WAS BLOWN THE FUCK AWAY!!!! PEARS are like the 21st Century's Black Flag and Minor Threat fused together! They're fast, melodic, hardcore and just a mental orgasm of punk rock goodness!
As I said, I personally like 'Go To Prison' a bit more than 'Green Star', but that's just because it's just got that hardcore old school feel to it! When I listen to it, it feels like it came back in 1984 instead of 2014... When you put it on the record player, it makes you just wanna thrash around the house and fuck shit up! It's just raw and full of fucking energy! 'Green Star' has a bit of that feel to it, but 'Green Star' sounds more melodic and rehearsed, it sounds more good and less of that "feel" .. Um.. How do I say this?.. 'Go To Prison' has the feel like they did it in one take raw, 'Green Star' feels like they took their time and really polished it and made it sound really really good and personal. Not trying to insult PEARS, because I fucking love them! But I've listened to 'Go To Prison' way more over and over than 'Green Star' by far.. Nevertheless, I own both albums and I fucking love them!!
Also their name, PEARS.. That's a very unique name for a Punk Rock band, heh.. Especially a Hardcore Punk band.. PEARS, if I had no idea who they were, if someone just randomly told me about a band named PEARS. I'd think they're some soft-spoken Indie rock band.. Which honestly, at first.. That's what I thought they were before I listened to them. (But then again, they were playing with the Subhumans so that says something, doesn't it?). I've heard a lot of bands on Fat Wreck Chords and many other independent labels today and just what's really popular with a lot of new school punkers I know today.. I honestly get kinda sceptical about most new acts because of the whole nice, clean cut, well trained singer mentality and how they try to sound good and poppish.. Thankfully, PEARS are truly Hardcore, Juicy and Healthy Punk Rock I really hope they stay that way!
Oi, when your name is PEARS.. I gotta make these references! It's just natural! Like PEARS!.. Okay, I'll stop! hehe But seriously, this band is fucking rad! I bought Go To Prison and Green Star and I was gonna see them LIVE! on Thursday with NOFX and Useless ID but sadly, I can't afford a $50 Concert Ticket right now... LIFE SUCKS!!! BUT PEARS TASTE GOOD, THEY'RE JUICY HARDCORE AND HEALTHY FOR YOU!! So... Upon reading this all, go listen to PEARS, buy their 2 Records from Fat Wreck Chords and go see them live (take me with you)!!

ReplyDeleteSubhumans are good! Grew up listening to them! Are you sure it was the Subhumans UK? Or was it Subhumans Canada? I don't listen to the radio either, I just grew up in the Punk Rock Scene, rocking out at gigs and spending hours up on hours and record stores... Punk is my life.
